How WeMakeShadows began
From an inspiration to a craft shaped by light
The story of WeMakeShadows began long before the brand had a name. During a period focused on software and entrepreneurship, a chance conversation with an industrial designer opened an unexpected door. She asked a simple question—whether there was anything creative I pursued outside of work. Soon after, she shared the shadow and light works of Fabrizio Corneli. The moment those images appeared on the screen, something resonated: the blend of light, form and emotion felt unlike anything I had seen. It was clear that this art form held a quiet kind of magic.
That first inspiration led to experimentation. With a background in software, the technical foundations were built step by step, shaping silhouettes from photographs and understanding how depth, material and light could work together. Later, while exploring new directions in life and work, the idea of creating something meaningful through e-commerce resurfaced. The early prototypes were shared for feedback, and a suggestion emerged that would influence the entire direction of the project: this art would become even more powerful if it were personalized for each individual.
From there, the process evolved. The software was rebuilt to support customization, the workflow refined, and even a custom lighting head was engineered—not only to reduce shipping costs caused by the oversized off-the-shelf components available at the time, but also to keep production quality and timing fully within our control. What began as curiosity, shared creativity and technical exploration continues to evolve into a craft that is refined step by step — shaped not by perfection, but by an ongoing commitment to improve every detail.
Through this journey, WeMakeShadows took shape—not as a single person’s idea, but as the product of inspiration, collaboration and a continuing pursuit to turn light, memory and design into something meaningful.
Invitation to curiosity, joy and reflection
Where light, curiosity and emotion come together
Looking back, the motivations behind WeMakeShadows were never fixed or perfectly defined. The idea of gaining financial freedom was one of the elements around the project, and it remains part of the broader picture today. Financial possibilities can create space for new directions, yet they were never the force capable of shaping or sustaining the project on their own.
What truly pushed the work forward were the reactions to the earliest prototype. The surprise, curiosity and quiet appreciation expressed by those who saw it reflected the same sense of wonder that originally sparked the idea. In those moments, it became clear that this work could evoke emotion and inspiration in a way that reached far beyond practical goals or intentions.
As the project continued, this response from others became its most meaningful source of motivation to continue. The thought that others might feel a spark of curiosity, joy or inspiration—and perhaps be encouraged to create something meaningful in their own lives—is the most powerfull deriving idea behind WeMakeShadows.
More to discover ahead
We’re just getting started
WeMakeShadows is still in an early phase, and there is room for the work to grow in ways we can’t fully see yet. New models will come with time, and there may be natural opportunities to bring shadow art into different places—public areas, hotels and shared spaces, or even small interventions in the urban environment. These possibilities are not set plans, but natural directions the project may explore as it develops.
What matters for now is to keep building with care, to refine what already exists, and to stay open to new forms that light and shadow might suggest in the future.
